Buddhist Resources|Corpus of Lü Cheng’s Buddhist Studies
Lü Cheng (January 10, 1896 – July 8, 1989) was a native of Danyang, Jiangsu Province, China.
In his early years, he studied agriculture, economics, and aesthetics before turning his full attention to Buddhist studies. His scholarly work continued until 1966, when the Cultural Revolution brought it to a halt. He had command of multiple languages, including English, Japanese, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Pāli, and emphasized the importance of historical context and the use of primary sources. He served as Director of Academic Affairs and later as Dean of Zhina neixue yuan (the Chinese Inner Studies Institute), a Buddhist education and research center founded in Nanjing.
The Corpus of Lü Cheng’s Buddhist Studies brings together his major contributions in textual criticism, doctrinal analysis, and pedagogy. His work spans Chinese, Indian, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Key writings include:
- Yindu Foxue Yuanliu Luejiang (Outline of the Development of Indian Buddhism)
- Zhongguo Foxue Yuanliu Luejiang (Outline of the Development of Chinese Buddhism)
- Yinming Ru Zhengli Lun Jiangjie (Explanation of the Nyayapravesa)
- Xinbian Hanwen Dazangjing Mulu (New Catalog of the Chinese Buddhist Canon)
On April 21, 2019, Lü Cheng’s son, Professor Lü Yingzhong of Tsinghua University (1926–2022), and his family generously granted CBETA a non-exclusive license to preserve and publish this digital corpus for public benefit.
