Critical Entry Revisions

The CBETA critical edition revises certain types of original critical entries. A few examples, based on the Taisho Tripitaka, are provided below:

  • Revised Content Note: Display the revisions made by CBETA.
  •
  • Interleaved Entries: Multiple entries overlap.
  •
  • Annotations: Annotated with phrases such as “as main text”, “as interlinear notes”, etc.
  •
  • Ellipsis Marks: Entries containing ellipses (…) are expanded where appropriate.
  •
  • Missing Entries: The main text contains a siglum without corresponding entry; the symbol is either omitted entirely or accompanied by a “CBETA Note” detailing the context.
  •
  • Edition Abbreviations: The edition abbreviation 【三】 is converted to 【宋】【元】【明】, and 【三】* to 【宋】*【元】*【明】*.
  •
  • CBETA Consulted Editions: Editions consulted independently by CBETA are identified by the suffix ‘-CB’. For example,【麗】indicates a record from the original critical apparatus, while【麗-CB】indicates a record from CBETA’s consultation of the Goryeo Canon.
  •
  • Special CBETA Notes: Certain special entries are marked with a “CBETA Note” that directly explains the relevant editorial context.
  •
  • Unclear Characters: Illegible characters in the printed source are represented by ▆.
  •
  • Missing Abbreviations: Omitted edition abbreviations are represented by【■】or displayed exactly as they appear in the original source text.”
  •
  • Character Substitution: “か” is consistently changed to “ヵ”.
  •
  • Subdivided Note Numbers: Some critical note numbers are subdivided using a, b or A, B.

    • Splitting Entries: The lowercase letters a and b indicate instances where CBETA has split a single entry into two.

      For example:
      T01n0023_p0277a03║[1a]大[1b]樓炭經卷第一
      [0277001a] 〔大〕-【宋】【元】【明】
      [0277001b] (佛說)+樓【明】*
    •
    • Distinguishing Identical Numbers: The uppercase letters A and B refer to instances where there are two identical critical note numbers in the main text of the Taisho Tripitaka, which CBETA differentiates as A and B.

      For example:
      T27n1545_p0003a19_##難覺不可尋思非尋思境。[02A]唯有微妙聰叡
      T27n1545_p0003b05_##作種種異說。然阿毘達磨勝義自性[02B]唯無漏
