Omitted Collation Sigla in Taishō Tripiṭaka

The following eight collation sigla do not appear in the apparatus tables (back matter) of the Taishō Tripiṭaka (大正藏), despite being used within its critical apparatus. Because they appear to represent scribal errors or editorial anomalies, CBETA has surveyed these occurrences and compiled the following preliminary findings for further scholarly review.

[ ][ ][ ][ 宮乙 ][ 敦方 ][ 敦內 ][ 聖丙 ][ 西 ]

【內】

Source: T51, no. 2092, Luoyang qielan ji 洛陽伽藍記

Remarks:

The provenance of this siglum, 【內】, is unknown. The character 內 (nei) is likely a scribal error for 丙 (bing). Its precise identity remains unresolved.

Source: T48, no. 2003, Foguo Yuanwu chanshi biyan lu 佛果圜悟禪師碧巖錄

Remarks:

This siglum may refer to the Cabinet Library (Naikaku Bunko 內閣文庫). A search in the National Archives of Japan (日本國立公文書館) confirms a recorded holding of the Foguo Yuanwu chanshi biyan lu under call number 310-0060. Alternatively, it may simply be a scribal error for 丙 (bing).

【別】

Source: T13, no. 397, Dafangdeng daji jing 大方等大集經

Remarks:

In Volume 1 of the Shōwa hōbō sōmokuroku 昭和法寶總目錄 (General Catalogue of the Buddhist Canon of the Shōwa Era), within the “Comparative Catalogue of the Taishō Tripiṭaka” (大正新脩大藏經勘同目錄, p. 251, under no. 397), the collated witnesses list both the Goryeo Alternate Edition (麗別本) and the Shōgo-zō Alternate Edition (聖別本).

It is unclear whether this standalone siglum, 【別】 (bie), refers to the Goryeo Alternate Edition, the Shōgo-zō Alternate Edition, or both. Standard Taishō editorial convention designates these two witnesses as 【麗乙】 (Goryeo B) and 【聖乙】 (Shōgo-zō B), respectively; there is no formal provision for 【麗別】, 【聖別】, or 【別】. All instances occur within T13n0397, which uses 【麗乙】 and 【聖乙】 alongside two anomalous occurrences of 【別】.

An examination of collation entries for “〔河〕-【別】” (omission of 河 in witness 【別】) reveals four occurrences across witnesses 【三】, 【宮】, 【知】, 【麗乙】, and 【別】—notably including “17〔河〕-【麗乙】” on page 199. Similarly, notes for “〔如〕-【別】” (omission of 如 in witness 【別】) show nine occurrences across 【三】, 【宮】, 【聖】, and 【別】—notably including “02 〔如〕-【聖】” on page 185. Crucially, the witnesses omitting 河 and those omitting 如 do not overlap between the 【聖】/【聖乙】 and 【麗】/【麗乙】 manuscript lineages; witness notes omitting 河 never include 【聖】 or 【聖乙】, while those omitting 如 never include 【麗】 or 【麗乙】.

Therefore, for the two occurrences of 【別】 in T13n0397:

  1. Page 185, note 14 (“〔河〕-【別】”), likely refers to 【麗乙】 (or 【麗別】).
  2. Page 192, note 19 (“〔如〕-【別】”), likely refers to 【聖乙】 (or 【聖別】).
(Note: While 【麗別】 and 【聖別】 might reflect designations in underlying source catalog records, neither conforms to standard Taishō sigla conventions.)

【南】

Source: T03, no. 174, Foshuo pusa shanzi jing 佛說菩薩睒子經

Remarks:

In Volume 1 of the Shōwa hōbō sōmokuroku (p. 192, under no. 174), no collated witness is designated by the siglum 【南】 (nan). However, Volume 2 (“Catalogue of the Southern Ming Canon” 大明三藏聖教南藏目錄, p. 334) lists two versions of the Shanzi jing: No. 211 (Pusa shanzi jing) and No. 213 (Foshuo shanzi jing). It is therefore plausible that 【南】 refers to the Southern Canon of the Ming Dynasty (Nan zang 南藏).

【宮乙】

Source: T14, no. 440, Foshuo foming jing 佛說佛名經

Remarks:

According to the “Comparative Catalogue” in the Shōwa hōbō sōmokuroku (vol. 1, p. 259, under no. 440), the collated witnesses include both the Gong edition (宮本; Imperial Household Library edition) and an alternate Gong copy (宮別本). The primary Imperial Household Library edition is designated by the siglum 【宮】. Following standard Taishō notation conventions, 【宮乙】 undoubtedly refers to the alternate copy (宮別本) cited in the catalog.

【敦方】

Source: T09, no. 262, Miaofa lianhua jing 妙法蓮華經 (Lotus Sūtra)

Remarks:

The provenance of the siglum 【敦方】 (Dun-fang) is unknown. It is not defined in the back matter, where the table for Dunhuang manuscripts lists only three sigla: 【敦】 (Dun), 【敦乙】 (Dun B), and 【敦丙】 (Dun C).

A review of the “Catalogue of Ancient Lost Sutras, Commentaries, and Manuscripts from Dunhuang” (燉煌本古逸經論章疏(并)古寫經目錄; Shōwa hōbō sōmokuroku, vol. 1, p. 1055, note [01]) shows that the listed manuscript sigla (英, 佛, 京, 大, 谷, 龍, 中, 山, 西, 三, 田, 江, 村, 未) contain no reference to 【敦方】. Consequently, where 【敦方】 appears in the apparatus, the siglum itself is retained in the digital text, but its witness identification remains unresolved pending further research.

【敦內】

Source: T09, no. 262, Miaofa lianhua jing 妙法蓮華經 (Lotus Sūtra)

Remarks:

The Shōwa hōbō sōmokuroku contains no record of the siglum 【敦內】 (Dun-nei). High-resolution examination of original images indicates that the character is actually 丙 (bing, i.e., Siglum C) rather than 內 (nei), making the intended siglum 【敦丙】 (Dun C).

Palaeographically, the central component of 丙 features a vertical stem extending upward (人), whereas 內 features a left-slanting stroke (入). In every instance where 【敦內】 appears, high-resolution manuscript images confirm a straight vertical stroke (丙). Because the back matter lists 【敦丙】, CBETA has corrected 【敦內】 to 【敦丙】.

【聖丙】

Source: T25, no. 1509, Dazhidu lun 大智度論

Remarks:

Regarding the collated witnesses for the Dazhidu Lun, the “Comparative Catalogue” (Shōwa hōbō sōmokuroku, vol. 1) lists three manuscript groups under the Shōgo-zō (聖語藏) collection for no. 1509: Sui Dynasty manuscripts, Tang Dynasty manuscripts, and Tenpyō-shōhō era manuscripts (天平勝寶經; Japanese manuscripts copied during the Tenpyō period).

The Taishō back matter lists only two sigla: 【聖】 (Sheng) and 【聖乙】 (Sheng B). The main Shōsō-in Shōgo-zō manuscripts (正倉院聖語藏本) are Tenpyō manuscripts (天平寫經) designated as 【聖】 (which includes the Tenpyō-shōhō manuscripts). The siglum 【聖乙】 is defined as an “Alternate Shōgo-zō manuscript from the Shōsō-in” (正倉院聖語藏本別寫). Because the catalog lists Sui, Tang, and Tenpyō manuscripts under this collection, 【聖乙】 likely refers to one of the non-Tenpyō groups.

Since Taishō collation sigla generally follow chronological order, 【聖乙】 (“Alternate Shōgo-zō manuscript”) most likely designates the Sui manuscripts. This is supported by an entry on page 410 of the “Comparative Catalogue” for T26n1522 (Shidi jing lun 十地經論), which identifies Shōgo-zō Sui Manuscript No. 3 (聖語藏隋經第三號) as a key collated text. Thus, 【聖乙】can be tentatively identified as the Shōgo-zō Sui manuscripts (聖語藏隋經), leaving the Tang manuscripts to be represented by 【聖丙】.

Source: T26, no. 1522, Shidi jing lun 十地經論

Remarks:

In the “Comparative Catalogue” (p. 410, under no. 1522), two Shōgo-zō witnesses are listed: Tenpyō Manuscripts and Sui Manuscripts, corresponding to 【聖】 and 【聖乙】.

In the “Catalogue of the Shōgo-zō Canon in the Shōsō-in” (正倉院御物聖語藏一切經目錄), entries for Shidi jing lun appear in “Part 1: Manuscripts” (第一類寫經之部) under Sui Manuscripts (p. 946), Tenpyō Manuscripts (p. 948), and Famous Transcripts (Meisha 名寫, p. 962), within which only【聖】and【聖乙】are noted. Cross-referencing with T53n1851 (Dasheng yizhang 大乘義章, p. 476) indicates that Meisha manuscripts also subsumed under the Tenpyō Manuscripts (天平寫經), i.e.【聖】.

While “Part 1” lists no Tang manuscripts for the Shidi jing lun, Volume 2 (“Part 2: [Miscellaneous] Manuscripts” 第二類[雜經]寫經之部, p. 970) lists No. 102 (Shidi lun, 5 vols.) and No. 103 (Shidi jing, 8 vols.). Because Nos. 102 and 103 are cataloged between Tang-era works (e.g., Datang neidian lu 大唐內典錄 and Zhenyuan xinding shijiao mokuroku貞元新定釋教目錄), they fall under the Tang Manuscripts category in the Shōgo-zō collection. This provides the probable origin of the siglum 【聖丙】 (Sheng C) in T26n1522.

【西】

Source: T24, no. 1496, Foshuo zheng gongjing jing 佛說正恭敬經

Remarks:

The collation siglum【西】(Xi) does not appear in the back matter. A check of the “Comparative Catalogue” (Shōwa hōbō sōmokuroku, vol. 1, p. 405) reveals that the collated witnesses listed include the Sung, Yuan, Ming, Gong (Imperial Household Library), and Saifuku-ji (西福寺) editions etc. Therefore,【西】 is almost certainly a typographical for the standard siglum【福】(Fu) representing the Saifuku-ji edition.
