They asked whether having such materials in the collection might mislead readers or even harm Buddhism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Our perspective is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Scholars of Buddhist studies analyze the texts through the lens of historical and textual source materials, offering academic insights. These scholars are not necessarily Buddhists, and their research is not always intended to disseminate the Dharma. Yet, from another perspective, this academic approach engages intellectuals in a shared dialogue, deepening the understanding of the teachings and elevating the standing of Buddhism in modern society.<br\/><br\/>Nevertheless, out of devotion and a sincere desire to protect the Dharma, some Buddhists may understandably find certain scholarly opinions difficult to accept, and they may have reservations about having these materials in the CBETA collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">CBETA is a provider of electronic Buddhist texts\u2014specifically, the &#8216;CBETA Electronic Buddhist Text Archive,&#8217; which is continuously updated through digital technology, rather than a single, authoritative &#8216;Electronic Tripitaka.&#8217; As such, we do not view the materials in our collection through the lens of formal canonical status, nor does CBETA make value judgments regarding the authenticity of the texts themselves or the relative merits of different sectarian doctrines.<br\/><br\/>Our readership spans both Buddhists and those outside the religious community, including academic researchers and followers of other faiths. While digital Buddhist texts offer greater convenience for circulation and reference than traditional print editions, when it comes to lineage traditions and actual practice, readers are encouraged to rely on the Buddha&#8217;s teachings for discernment and seek guidance from Dharma teachers or mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, analyzing the authenticity of Buddhist texts through disciplines like philology is not unique to modern scholarship. Collectors of these materials have sought to identify apocryphal texts since ancient times. <br\/><br\/>Looking at historical catalogs, for instance, the &#8216;Catalog of Suspected Texts&#8217; by Dao&#8217;an of the Eastern Jin (\u6771\u6649\uff0e\u9053\u5b89\u3008\u7591\u7d93\u9304\u3009)\u2014preserved in Sengyou&#8217;s Liang Dynasty work, Collection of Records on the Translation of the Tripitaka (\u6881\uff0e\u50e7\u7950\u300a\u51fa\u4e09\u85cf\u8a18\u96c6\u300b)\u2014lists twenty-six suspected texts, to which Sengyou added another twenty apocryphal works (<a href=\"https:\/\/cbetaonline.dila.edu.tw\/zh\/T55n2145_p0038b07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">T55n2145_p0038b07<\/a>-p0039b15). The records in these catalogs serve as vital source materials for modern scholars investigating apocrypha.<br\/><br\/>Furthermore, these historical lists of apocryphal texts and records of canonical status directly shaped the contents of successive generations of the Tripitaka. The compilers of these early catalogs were often Vinaya masters who strictly upheld monastic precepts. Yet, even in their rigorous examinations, discrepancies in judgment occurred, and the texts preserved across different eras of the Tripitaka varied.<br\/><br\/>Historically, texts deemed apocryphal were excluded from the canon. However, the modern Taisho Tripitaka features sections like the &#8216;Non-Buddhist Section&#8217; and the &#8216;Apocrypha Section,&#8217; while the Manji Zokuzokyo contains commentaries on Buddhist texts by the Daoist &#8216;Imperial Lord Fuyu&#8217; (\u5b5a\u4f51\u5e1d\u541b; L\u00fc Dongbin \u5442\u6d1e\u8cd3). Evidently, historical catalog compilers and canonical editors have long presented diverse facets of Buddhism through their compilations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, while some may have concerns about the authenticity of texts, these evidence-based perspectives help provide a more comprehensive understanding of the historical development of Buddhism.<br\/><br\/>In fact, historical editions of the Tripitaka preserve many debates and criticisms between different schools, including early arguments claiming that &#8216;Mahayana is not the Buddha&#8217;s teaching.&#8217; Seeing these diverse viewpoints is essential to understanding how the tradition evolved.<br\/><br\/>Furthermore, the modern anthologies preserved in our collection are bound by licensing agreements.
